Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Early Detection, Screening, and Free Consultation at ICTC Mumbai

By ICTC Oncology Team

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an important global initiative dedicated to spreading awareness about early detection, screening, and timely treatment of breast cancer. At ICTC, we believe that knowledge, early diagnosis, and access to expert cancer care can save lives. Through this initiative, we aim to empower individuals with the right information and provide accessible cancer care across Mumbai.

Understanding Breast Cancer

Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming a lump or mass. There are multiple types of breast cancer, including HER2-positive breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer, and hormone receptor–positive breast cancer. In some cases, cancer cells may spread to nearby lymph nodes or distant organs, resulting in metastatic breast cancer.

Although breast cancer is far more common in women, breast cancer in men—also known as male breast cancer—is possible. Awareness among men is equally important, as symptoms may be overlooked, leading to delayed diagnosis.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Recognizing early warning signs of breast cancer is critical for early diagnosis and effective treatment. Some common symptoms include:

  • A lump in the breast or underarm area

  • Swelling in part of the breast or nearby lymph nodes

  • Changes in breast skin texture, dimpling, or redness

  • Breast cancer rash or skin thickening

  • Nipple discharge or nipple inversion

  • Persistent pain in the breast or chest area

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is essential to consult a qualified oncologist immediately for proper evaluation and diagnosis.

Stages of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer staging helps determine the extent of disease and guides treatment decisions. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.

  • Stage 0 Breast Cancer: Non-invasive cancer confined to breast ducts

  • Stage 1 Breast Cancer: Small tumor with minimal or no lymph node involvement

  • Stage 2 Breast Cancer: Larger tumor or spread to nearby lymph nodes

  • Stage 3 Breast Cancer: Advanced local spread without distant metastasis

  • Stage 4 Breast Cancer (Metastatic): Cancer has spread to distant organs such as bones, liver, lungs, or brain

Treatment options may include breast cancer surgery, mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy depending on the stage and type of breast cancer.

Importance of Breast Cancer Screening

Regular breast cancer screening plays a vital role in detecting cancer at an early and more treatable stage. Screening methods include:

  • Mammogram screening to detect tumors before they are physically noticeable

  • Breast ultrasound and MRI for high-risk individuals

  • Clinical breast examination by trained healthcare professionals

  • Self-breast examination to identify early changes or lumps

Timely screening can prevent disease progression, reduce complications, and significantly improve survival rates.
