Dr. Kunal Goyal: Redefining Hematology with a Life-Saving Success Story

Dr. Kunal Goyal: Redefining Hematology with a Life-Saving Success Story In a modest town in Gujarat, Najni Khan, a 28-year-old woman, and her husband, a daily wage worker, had nearly given up hope of starting a family after two devastating pregnancy losses. Her third pregnancy brought hope but was shadowed by a rare and life-threatening diagnosis: Type 3 Von Willebrand, one of the rarest bleeding disorders, affecting less than 1 in 1,000,000 women. The journey to a safe delivery seemed insurmountable until Dr. Kunal Goyal, a renowned hematologist at the Indian Cancer Treatment Centre (ICTC), stepped in to make the impossible possible. Hematology Expertise of Dr Kunal Goyal Dr. Kunal Goyal specializes in hematology, bringing unmatched expertise to cases involving blood disorders and cancers. When Najni presented with severe clotting factor deficiencies (Factor VIII and Von Willebrand Factor), her condition required meticulous planning, close monitoring, and the seamless coordination of a multidisciplinary medical team. “Najni faced a high-risk pregnancy compounded by spontaneous bleeding episodes,” said Dr. Goyal. “Our goal was not only to stop her bleeding but also to ensure her pregnancy reached full term. Every decision was critical and time-sensitive.” The Role of Hematology in High-Risk Pregnancies Type 3 Hemophilia poses unique challenges for pregnant women. With severely low clotting factors, even minor injuries or shifts in the body can lead to catastrophic bleeding. Dr. Goyal led the team to stabilize Najni’s condition, monitoring her factor levels and coordinating treatments with obstetricians and critical care specialists. The case involved: Factor Replacement Therapy: Administering specialized Factor VIII and Von Willebrand Factor concentrates to prevent spontaneous bleeding. Team Coordination: Collaborating with obstetricians, anesthetists, and critical care teams to ensure a seamless approach during delivery. Financial Assistance: Securing resources to cover the high cost of treatment, ensuring the family’s financial situation did not hinder care. “Precision and preparation were key,” Dr. Goyal noted. “From weekly evaluations to planning the cesarean delivery, every step was taken to mitigate risks.” A Benchmark in Hematology and Maternal Care Najni successfully delivered a healthy baby through a meticulously planned cesarean section. Post-delivery, both mother and child were monitored intensively to ensure recovery. This case is now cited as a benchmark in managing high-risk pregnancies in patients with Type 3 Hemophilia. Dr. Goyal’s contributions highlight the critical role hematologists play in saving lives, not only in cases of blood cancer but also in rare bleeding disorders.
